The time has come for decisive action. My cover has been conclusively blown, my identity established by those I would have hidden it from, and I don’t want to spend the next few years running. We’ve uncovered plenty of data, and now it’s time to apply it.

I’m going on a bit of a fishing expedition. I’ll let you know how it pans out as soon as I can.

Pandora’s Box is Open

I was approached by someone from the human resources department this morning. She told me that she’d been asked to begin my termination paperwork, but due to the length and strength of our friendship, she thought I deserve a bit of a warning to brace myself for the news. I’m more grateful to her for telling me than she’ll ever know.

I’m sure if I had waited for the official notice to come, I’d have been escorted out by security. I’m not as sure that they would have merely seen me to the door. Given Soren Ulfert’s precedent, I’d lay even odds that I’d have received a bullet to the head in the parking lot, or a charming billet in some military prison.

I didn’t wait. That final move I’ve been planning involved swiping a certain colleague’s security badge while he was in the restroom and letting myself into a secure document center. I snatched a few likely-seeming files, stuffed them in my briefcase, and told the receptionist I’d be taking a long lunch today. I’m sure they caught it on camera, but the jig was already up, so what’s the harm?

I don’t want to be the sole keeper of all of this information. It’s not safe, not for me and not for the truth. So I’m going to send copies to just a few of you that I’ve grown to trust. Keep an eye on your mailbox for the next few days.

We have become aware of a very serious internal security breach. We are working around the clock to identify the culprit. If you see any suspicious behavior in your team, report it immediately.

I was right. I haven’t been able to get any new information. Worse, the hallways at work have been filled with serious-looking men in dark suits and earpieces having quiet conversations. They look over us like they’re wolves and we’re lambs, and I don’t doubt that I’m the one they plan on having to dinner.

Pushing the Envelope

My suspicions from earlier in the week are correct. Yesterday I
attended a mandatory all-day training session on internal security.
I’m concerned that the sloppy procedures I’ve been exploiting to get
our information won’t last much longer. I may have already done all
that I can.

That said, I’ve abandoned any idea of protecting my career. This is
much too big and much too important for my cozy retirement to weigh
against it. I’m going to keep pursuing these answers on Naaczaal no
matter what the cost.

It looks like I’m not the only one who feels like time is running out,

The schematics in that package are for parts of a hydraulic system. It’s not clear what it’s meant to drive.

Some of you have suggested that Project Naaczaal is an effort to build spacecraft in an effort to evacuate the earth on or before 2012. I reluctantly must admit that, given the scope of information we’re seeing, that seems plausible. Especially given this, from Jacob – thank you, Jacob – the decipherment of the file intercepted last week. It’s a construction timeline, and it ends in 2012.

Many of you have written to tell me or to tell Soren Ulfert that Naaczaal is a Mayan word meaning “to be lifted.” What is being lifted and to where are left in question. I have my theories, but I prefer to keep my hypotheses private until I have accumulated more data.

And on the topic of more data, that brings me to today’s urgent communiqué. Thanks to a continuing slackard security practice, I’ve developed a robust method for running continuing Naaczaal queries. On Saturday I found another time and place, but it was much too far for me to consider intercepting it personally, and I was trapped in indecision on posting the precise information here. For one thing, I’m concerned about drawing too much attention to myself.

This morning the appointment came and went, and I can’t stop thinking about the valuable information that might be in my hands right now if only I could find a way to get it without endangering my career.

Still, since last week’s find, my curiosity has been engaged, and that’s a much more powerful motivator than even my outrage. If I find another appointment, I’ll have to find a way to intercept it again. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.

I drove through the night to get to that appointment, armed with a video camera. I was in disguise, after a fashion. I had excavated my closet to find things I haven’t worn in thirty years, and that nobody would recognize me in today. Especially not anyone I work with, in the new group or the old.

I shouldn’t have bothered. It was nothing like I had expected.

I thought I’d be seeing an assemblage of corrupt administrators and politicians. In my imagined scenario, I would snap a few incriminating photographs, perhaps record an incriminating conversation, and head straight for the press or the FBI. But the address was just some store.

After an impatient few minutes, I went in and browsed the stock. Comic books, if you must know.

I was clearly out of place. Before long, an employee approached me and asked if I needed help. In a flash of inspiration, I blurted out the password. The employee nodded, unsurprised, and led me to the counter. I was given a bag and ushered outside, too shocked to think to ask any questions.

It looks like it wasn’t a meeting I discovered, but some sort of surreptitious data exchange. The bag contained, among other things, a cell phone with a document on it.

The bad news is that I may have more information now, but I haven’t been able to make heads or tails of it. It’s encrypted. I might be able to crack it if I had a month to spare to work on it, but I don’t.

Project Naaczaal

One of my readers emailed me saying that one Soren Ulfert has a connection to Project Naaczaal at the Institute for Human Continuity. Thanks for that, it looks like an intriguing lead.

I’d never heard of this Institute before, and I have no idea what it has to do with my own employer, but Naaczaal isn’t exactly a common word, is it? I’ve reached out to Dr. Ulfert to see if he has any more information. We’ll see what comes of it.

Meanwhile, I’ve done a little more creeping around and subverting security policies. I finally hit a vein with one search for NCZL. I turned up an address, a date and time, and what looks like a password for a security system. It’s not close by, and I don’t know what precisely to expect if I turn up there, but I’m going to roll the dice and check it out.

What’s past is prologue

I was concerned that my hunt would be effectively ended when I was reassigned. I have no question that was the intent. But I’ve found that this new group has lax security standards. Think along the lines of passwords left on stick-it notes on monitors, or secure terminals left logged in and unattended.

It’s shameful. If I weren’t taking advantage of it, I’d be reporting it.

I won’t go into specifics here, but I was able to access data that I typically would not. I took advantage of it to search for information on my missing $180 million item. I didn’t expect to find anything.

Imagine my surprise when I turned up a run-of-the-mill form filed when resources are reallocated from one project to another. This basic particle of bureaucracy wouldn’t typically be so secure, so I can only speculate that I’m dealing with a black hole of a black ops project. If that’s the case, I can think of enough policies, statutes and mandates it’s breaking to keep an office building of lawyers busy for the next decade.

So yes, I’m going to keep at it. And now I have something to go on. Two words: Project Naaczaal.

Reassigned

Apparently I am not enough of a team player, as they say in manager-land. All of my meticulous work has had a definite, immediate result.

I’ve been reassigned to another group. It’s not precisely a demotion, but it’s not far from it. I don’t know if I’ll be in a position to continue searching from my new role, but I certainly won’t give up. I have learned one important lesson, though: Management isn’t to be trusted.

The Extent of the Problem

Knowledge is power, so I’ve spent the last few days making myself as powerful as possible. I stayed long after hours through the holiday weekend to take a complete inventory and see if I could thoroughly identify all of the resources that we should have… but don’t.

There should have been some hint of a pattern; high-value shipments, low-security equipment. Or perhaps a pattern of escalation as the thieves became increasingly bolder. What I found was perplexing. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

The disappearances ran deeper than I had known. No area has been spared. The $180 million item has some innate value, and I can easily see it sold on the black market – possibly to a foreign government. But even smaller items have vanished, and recently, too. Boxes of nuts and bolts and soldering wire, crates of graph paper and cheap pens. Who would do this, and why? I struggle to make sense of it, but fail.

Still, now I have more than suspicion to bring to the table. I’m writing a thorough report and have requested another meeting with our head of security and my own manager. Let’s see them laugh this one off.
